Friendship Missionary Baptist Church was
organized by the Rev. P.R.D. Gore on January
21, 1903 with fourteen people as charter members.
The church was named Friendship Baptist Church and
an invitation was extended for membership. Two
people joined to be baptized on the next Sunday.
The first church building was erected in 1906 and
stood until 1956 when it was dismantled for the
erection of the present building.
The church was under the leadership of the Rev.
Gore. It had a Sunday School and a Good Manner Day
School conducted by Lottie Barbour. Rev. Gore
served as pastor of the church until 1930. Rev.
J.W. Caldwell became the second pastor and
served only for a year. Rev. T.R. Rucker
was called to the church after Rev. Caldwell and
his tenure continued until his death in 1945.
After his death, Rev. J.J Alexander was
called to serve and become pastor in 1946. Under
his leadership, the church grew to approximately
475 members. Because of the rapid increase in the
membership during his tenure, a new structure was
planned and built. Rev. Alexander was pastor from
1946 until he retired in 1975. His association
with the church lasted a total of 29 years.
Rev. T.M. Walker became interim pastor
until Rev. D.U. Cooper moved to Hickory and
became pastor in 1976. He remained pastor until
1987. Rev. E.B. Wilkerson came to the
church in 1989. He remained pastor, a new building
addition was completed in 1995. Rev. Wilkerson
served as pastor until his death in 2000.
After his death Rev. Antonio Logan
became interim pastor in 2001. He became the
permanent pastor of the church in 2003 and the
church continues to be under his able leadership.
